Andrea Stewart (Tommy)

Painting

Although I was born in West Sussex, I spent much of my early years in Africa, South America and the Middle East. I drew and painted relentlessly up until the age of 17. What followed was a gap of 37 years before I picked up my paint brushes again... that’s another story. At the age of 18, I went on to study Design and Communication at Ravensbourne College of Art & Design. Then a Master of Arts Degree, at The Central School, London, specialising in Educational Material for wildlife conservation. After graduating, I worked as a designer in London, before setting up a design agency in the late 1980’s.

After 15 years the agency was sold, I then settled in Suffolk, with my husband and son. Over the years, we had a lot of fun setting up and running an award-winning self-catering cottage, a home and garden shop (with a plant nursery), but eventually I returned to my first love …. painting and wildlife.

I’m a self-taught artist who works in acrylic on stretched canvas. My paintings develop and evolve through the many layers of paint I add to create depth and dimension, with extensive use of underpainting and glazes.

I feel passionately about the conservation of both wildlife and the environment. I hope the detail I incorporate into my art, through painstaking observation and research, enables people to get closer and appreciate the beauty, character and uniqueness of the creatures we share the world with, to inspire them to protect and conserve.
