Textiles

I make work in textiles. I use words: Conversation, quotations, thoughts, questions, facts, then embroider them as comment to express my current thinking. Stitches range through traditional hand embroidery, plain sewing and machine. Surface may be cloth of different kinds, garments, fabrics I create or find, new or old and broken. Some surfaces are not fibre.

The work grows out of social or cultural observation and expresses my response through its visual representation, the surface I make, and the language or text chosen to embellish it. I often write or find poetry to use. Recently I have become interested in using old letters and the letter form in my work, but sometimes a single word is more powerful, allowing as it does, the reader to find their own context for it. Sewing is slow and allows thinking time.
Each piece evolves to become what it is as the sewing progresses.
