Michelle Watson

Painting

Artist statement
I like to play with the extremities of light and shade upon the body or face displaying pattern and depth. It gives a strength and substance to the armature below. For me the oil paint becomes the skin as the canvas bears the deeper connection to the self. Isolation of the subject coerces an intimate engagement between the viewer and the solitary figure. The use of colour intensifies this as a more sculptural piece takes form. During moments alone, I observe my body and any physical changes and address my mental state of mind. I use and exploit them. I hope to signify much of this.
