Illustration

From the age of 7 I enjoyed drawing. The inheritance of my Father's fondness for all things Science Fiction had quite an influence on my subject matter, and I could easily find inspiration in the works of Bob Wakelin, Boris Valejo and Rodney Matthews.

By 13 I'd decided that the career of an illustrator was what I wanted, and focused on that. At 17 I studied General Art and Design at Suffolk College, but this was to prove to be the beginning of the end. I wanted my tutors to teach me how to get improve at what I wanted to create. Instead, they wanted to mold me into their 'product'. Demoralised by their constant criticism and left devoid of any confidence, I quit the course, and shortly afterwards I quit drawing altogether.

25 years later I gave it another go, and after a bit of rustiness had swept away, I found myself enjoying it yet again. I still love the challenge of using black ink fineliners, not being able to erase or paint over a mistake. I use hatching, cross hatching, pointilism, random lines, and my own invented technique, skimming! And the Science Fiction twist is something I still like to add to my drawings of east Suffolk's landmarks and landscapes."
