Lawrie Flood

Lawrie is a self-taught artist who has painted and drawn since childhood, using art as a lifelong way to explore and express the world around him. Originally from Devon and now based on the Essex coast, he draws inspiration from the shifting skies, open landscapes, and emotional tones of the natural world.

Working primarily in oil paint, Lawrie also creates with acrylic, watercolour, and pen and ink – choosing his medium intuitively to suit the subject or feeling he wishes to convey. Best known for his contemporary landscapes, he paints with a loose, expressive style that captures atmosphere and movement, especially in the skies. His work often focuses on mood and sensation rather than precise detail, though he also explores more focused subjects, such as portraiture, where a different kind of observation and control comes into play.

In addition to his own practice, Lawrie is passionate about encouraging others to connect with their creativity. He founded a local plein air painting group, offering support and community to those who have always wanted to paint outdoors but lacked the confidence to begin.

Whether working alone or alongside others, Lawrie’s practice is grounded in curiosity, emotional honesty, and a deep commitment to making art accessible and meaningful—for himself and for those around him.’
