Rodney Bastable

Painting

Rodney spent his formative years living on Lord Derby’s Stanley House estate in Newmarket, Suffolk, where his father was employed as Head Gardener. This provided the foundation for his artistic interests in nature, landscape and the horse and rider.

In 1973 he began life as a professional artist, having studied at Great Yarmouth College of Art (an annexe of the Norwich School), and at Winchester School of Art. Over the following years he has had many exhibitions around East Anglia and further afield.

In the late 1970’s his painting methods were affected by his studies of lighting, involving a wide range of application techniques. This greatly enhanced accuracy in observation and transfer. He is enthusiastically determined to share these ideas and skills in a figurative revival, through his tutoring.

‘‘Uniquely, since 1978, I have been consulting on the correct use of physical light, illuminating galleries and special interior and exterior architectural projects, alongside my painting and other artistic endeavours. My studies of light, in the context of engineering science, have given me a strong technical base, so that I am able to depict structural form, after images and veiling reflections within my paintings, dealing with the very essence of light within physical space.’’
