Welcome to our “Meet the Artist” with Ben Wardle who has a full membership with Art in East Anglia! I had the delightful opportunity to drive through our beautiful Suffolk to meet with him at his place of work in Westleton. The sun was shining so we chatted surrounded by beautiful countryside and it was fantastic to learn more about Ben, his inspirations and story behind his art.
His passion for nature and the environment around him was palpable.
His plans for the future where he will be using his art as a tool to
create opportunities
for people to come together to celebrate our environment and to
raise awareness of our personal responsibility in actively caring for
it.
We are thrilled to have Ben on the directory and we are excited to continue our connection and support Ben in all he does artistically.
1. Who are you and what do you do?
I'm Ben Wardle and I'm a landscape artist based near Halesworth, Suffolk. During the day I ride horses for various people and presently manage a livery yard with my wife Annette and my daughter Martha.
2. What does your art mean to you?
It means escape, freedom, relaxation and is my most important and natural method of communication. It is therapeutic, and it levels me.
3. Has your practice changed over time?
Most definitely. I used to be obsessed with detail and an almost photographic level of attention to detail. Regular pet portrait commissions give me an outlet for that detail now, but an MA in fine Art completed in 2016 taught me to paint not just what I see but also what I feel with equal levels of passion. The wild East Anglian landscapes I paint now have grown as a result of my degree studies. I don't feel I have even begun to do justice to the outstanding environment I live in, and that will be my focus for the foreseeable future.
4. What has been your favourite artistic experience over the last 12 months?
Painting a huge landscape mural on the wall of my daughter’s playground, and then helping her and her classmates add a flower each to that landscape. We need creative thought to succeed in all walks of life. I hope I helped Martha and her classmates realise that.
5. What inspires you?
I want to progress, improve, and expand my boundaries. I love applying paint to canvas. Painting has always been a great escape for me. I have always wanted to be really good at it. My main drive is to become the best I can be at what I do.
6. What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can't live without in your studio?
I am constantly looking at new methods of applying paint, but what I can't live without in my studio is space and a freedom to be as messy as I like.
