1. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Emma Torfinn; I live in Bury St Edmunds juggling a busy family life with my start up ‘Torfinn Art’. We moved here after an adventurous 19 years in London for a more relaxed way of life and some fresh air for the kids! I draw graphic pictures of my favourite local towns, landscapes, iconic buildings and coastline and individualise them with a splash of colour.
2. What does your art mean to you?
I’m lucky to do a job I love - it’s like a mini therapy session, (when it goes to plan….) The process of the first inspiration, building up the lines of perspective, sensing the balance of going too far with the line making and adding the final injection of colour to finish the piece. It’s rewarding to have an end product, a sense of achievement – especially when it sells!
3. Has your practice changed over time?
Like a fine wine, it seems to be improving with age. I am always evolving and perfecting my style, taking on board feedback from customers, friends, and family – a bit of constructive criticism goes a long way. I try to introduce a new theme to my work each year, emphasising flowers or printed sky themes to enhance and show a different skill.
4. What has been your favourite artistic experience over the last 12 months?
An American lady I met at a craft fair has now become my best customer – despite the fact she lives in Texas now. She commissioned paintings of all the houses she has lived in and sends me a picture of her photo wall once the latest commission arrived – it’s an ongoing project!
5. What inspires you?
Trips back to London, just to wander; people watch and visit some museums. It’s always alive and inspiring; I come back rejuvenated and bursting with new ideas, be it about the way I might present the stall at a craft fair or new idea on perspective. My kids inspire me with their enthusiasm and comments – it’s always the truth!
6. What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can't live without in your studio?
My posture chair to keep my back straight and a 0.05 Graphik Line Maker!
7. Where can we see your work?
I sell my work in The Handmade Shop and Gallery on St Johns Street, BSE and the Magpie Gallery in Lavenham. I can be found at various craft fairs throughout the year – Ivy Joan Maker Market - BSE, Blackthorpe Barn - Rougham, and Lavenham Christmas Market.
My work can also be seen on my website – www.torfinnart.com
