I love getting out and about and meeting artists and seeing for myself the fantastic work and projects that are happening in East Anglia. Yesterday I met with the wonderful Charlie Meyer from Suffolk Art Link and had the pleasure of meeting some of the participating artists on their Step Up project.
Suffolk Art Link is a participatory arts charity. They develop and deliver inclusive arts programmes in communities that bring skills, support networks, confidence and joy to people in the East.
Their creative projects aim to help people transform their lives through the arts, and are delivered in places including community centres, hospitals and hospices, residential homes, refuges and schools.
Their work is led by experienced arts practitioners, encompassing a rich variety of art forms, and is delivered in close partnership with care, education, voluntary and community organisations
One of the projects Suffolk Art Link runs is JumpstART; an arts training course for people with learning disabilities. JumpstART! offers students the chance to enjoy an in-depth exploration of an art form whilst developing creative and life skills. This has been really successful and from this Step Up was born.
Step Up is a professional development programme for visual artists in Suffolk including those with learning disabilities. Artists will work together in pairs, as equals, to explore creativity. During the project our artists will have an opportunity to produce new works of art inspired by each others’ practice, develop new support networks and benefit from artistic and professional development.
It was wonderful to hear how meaningful relationships have been
developed from the pairing up of artists and everyone is learning and
growing from being
creative together. Alongside creating they have also attended
workshops which explore subjects like, how to approach a gallery and
exploring our identities
as artists.
The project will culminate in an exhibition at the Jerwood DanceHouse in July 2018, which will showcase the artist’s work and ideas.
